Home of the ‘Peckham Experiment’, built by engineer Sir Owen Williams in 1935
Yesterday I went on a tour of the Pioneer Health Centre in Peckham as part of Open House weekend. It’s only a 5 minute walk from where I live and the building has always intrigued me. It’s been made into private flats now but the building has a very interesting past. Set up in 1935 by Drs Scott Williamson and Innes Pearse as an experiment to improve public health through preventative medicine, education and community care, it was opened in 1936 to the public who could pay 1 Shilling a week to become a member and use facilities such as a kindergarten, cafeteria, pool, gymnasium, theatre, and take part in physical excercise classes and other workshops. The project finished in the 1950s with the introduction of the NHS.

You can watch a film about the centre here
HOW IT LOOKS NOW…
Exterior
Pool (not original)
Viewing area (would have been used by doctors to observe the pool area)
A fireplace!

Rayday, 1968 – 1976
Last night I went to see a live performance of Jeff Keen’s films at the Tate Modern Tanks. I particularly enjoyed the large cylindrical screen that you could sit inside of and see multiple films playing at once. Good stuff.

You may or may not know that sometimes I like to dj under the name sevenovertwelve with my buddy Amy Alsop. We’ve just made a facebook group and it’s really quite interesting if you’re a fan of the smaller record. Check it out here!

Some photos (mainly in Peckham and New Cross) I took for a disposable camera project that formed part of the visuals for the ISYS x NTS Paved With Gold event at the Tate Modern last Friday.

Originally published in 1998 and edited by Jason Evans, W’HAPPEN has been made available again by
Antenne books . The content of this book, created by then up and coming photographers and stylists, echoed real life and took it’s aesthetic from documentary photography. These young photographers (including Corinne Day, Nick Knight, Wolfgang Tillmans, Nigel Shafran, Elaine Constantine and more) and stylists took what the saw on the streets, in clubs and the world around them and used it to created a new wave of style for the 90s that had a DIY approach to photography and styling, and an unconventional choice of locations and models.

My most recent radio show for ISYS and NTS is available to listen to here…
For this months ISYS show we went out onto the streets of the Olympic Boroughs and spoke to local people about London life before and during the Olympics. Our contributors told us what they thought it meant to be a Londoner in 2012 and what set London apart as a city, they also picked songs which they thought evoked the sound of London.
